This month's spiritual project is to increase your participation in the Sacraments within your personal spirituality:

  1. Consider the Sacramental Sign and the Sacramental Promises for each Sacrament you have participated in.
  2. Develop a plan for living the Sacramental Sign and Sacramental Promise more completely.
  3. Pray for the Holy Spirit to stir up the graces that Jesus gave you in each Sacrament and help you implement your plan.
  4. Choose the first steps that you think you can actually implement this month and start rebuilding the Chapel of your Inner Abbey!

Webcast: How to LIVE the Sacraments in Your Personal Spiritual Life

This month's webcast explores how we can live the Sacraments in our personal spiritual life. We'll explore why the Sacraments are called the "founts of grace," and how we can live the Sacraments by each Sacrament's sign and oath

Spot Check: Living the Sacrament of Baptism

In this spot check, we focus in on living the Sacrament of Baptism.  We explore the sign of  Baptism, which is being cleaned of Original Sin with holy water. Then we explore the oath of this Sacrament, which is to reject Satan and embrace the Holy Trinity.

Spot Check: Living the Sacrament of Confirmation

In this spot check, we dive deeper into the Sacrament of Confirmation. We explore the sign of  Confirmation, which is being sealed with the Gifts of the Holy Spirit with sacred chrism. Then we explore the oath of this Sacrament, which is to use the Gifts we're sealed with to grow in intimacy with the Holy Trinity and to serve the Kingdom of God.

  • Definition of Merit

While we don't hear the term "merit" much anymore, the concept is still part of the constant teaching of the Church. It's just understood more as participation in the relationship with God than as "earning" grace. It's still a good idea to know the classic definition, though. Here it is from the Catholic Encyclopedia.

Fr. Mike Schmitz is one of the leading speakers to young people in the Church today. In this presentation, he explains how Christians truly become sons and daughters of God the Father for all eternity through the sacrament of Baptism.

Sr. Briege McKenna offers a brief but inspiring explanation of each of the Seven Sacraments, then shares stories about people who were specially touched by the graces that each Sacrament offers. This book is a wonderful introduction (or refresher course) to the sacraments but is also highly recommended for reflection and prayer.

We Catholics simply don’t expect enough of the sacraments. Sometimes I think they must be the most underutilized power sources on the planet.—from Chapter One

The sacraments lie dormant for many because we don’t understand them and don’t know how to tap into their supernatural energy. Living the Sacraments weaves together Scripture, the writings of the saints, and personal stories to help us understand these seven gifts of the Church and experience their practical and spiritual rewards.

“A Scriptural Guide to the Sacraments”

Father Herbert Burke teaches about the Seven Sacraments in a way that reveals their power and beauty. Fr. Burke explains the scriptural origins of the Sacraments, how they relate to each other, and how each one contributes to the life of a disciple.

“The Promise and Power of the Sacraments”

In this dynamic talk, Dr. Scott Hahn explains the importance of oaths, which invoke God’s name and implore His assistance. He shows that oaths are also the means of transforming our personal relationship with Christ into a covenant relationship. Dr. Hahn then explains what led him to move from believing in only two Sacraments to all seven. In sharing these insights, he connects oaths to the seven Sacraments and unveils their mystery and importance. He reveals that the Sacraments are the ordinary means by which God empowers us to do His will. You’ll discover that the Sacraments don’t make holiness easy, but they do make it possible.
